The Maldives is comprised of numerous Atolls that contain islands. The word Atoll is from Dhivehi (the language spoken in the Maldives).

The temprature fluctuates between 23°C and 32°C (74°F to 90°F).

The Maldives has a tropical climate and coconut palms and various tropical plants grow on the islands. The southwest monsoon brings most of the rain, mostly around June and July. Normally, the skies are clear during the north east monsoon.

History & Culture

The Maldives has been inhabited for atleast 2500 years. Records show that Kings of Maldives sent gifts to Roman Emperor Julian in 362 AD and visited the court of the Tang Dynasty Emperor of China in 658 AD.

 

The People

From ancient times, the Islands of Maldives has been a meeting point of African, Arab and Asian traders. These interactions helped shape the Maldivian way of life.

Maldivians are know for their friendliness and hospitality. Guests are welcomed and treated with courtesy. Smiles are considered the best gifts given to strangers.

 

Music

Bodu Beru (Big Drum) is the most popular of the traditions. It is believed to be introduced in the early 19th century by African mariners. Thaara (tambourine), which holds a special place in local entertaintment, was introduced from the Middle East in the 17th century.
